Follow one verse to related passages with four cross-reference Bible apps.
Pick a verse you already know and open it in each app below. Count how many related passages appear, then check whether you can jump to them with one tap and return to where you began. That small test shows quickly which layout suits the way you read.
Bible Cross References supplies links between passages; Cross Reference Study Bible displays references after verses, and Study Bible Reference lets you show or hide related texts while comparing two versions. The Context Bible also includes commentary, historical background and scholarly material. Study Bible Reference and The Context Bible have iPhone listings as well as Android ones, while the first two are for Android only.
Cross-reference apps for reading Scripture with Scripture
1. Bible Cross References
Bible Cross References, by TR Bible Apps, connects verses with other biblical passages through a collection of thousands of references. Every reference can be tapped and opens the chapter and verse it points to, which makes the app useful for letting one part of the Bible explain another.
A search covers the entire Bible, and verses can be copied or shared. Themes and other display options are included. The app contains adverts and is available only for Android.
Advantages:
- A collection containing thousands of references.
- One tap from a reference to its chapter.
- Search across the whole Bible.
2. Cross Reference Study Bible
Cross Reference Study Bible, by Timothy Ogoti, prints related verses at the end of each King James verse, with more than 340,000 links connecting passages through events, vocabulary and subject matter. The busiest verse has 97 of them, so you can limit how many appear at first or switch the feature off.
Highlighting in several colours, notes, bookmarks, reading history and search are included. Text-to-speech can read Scripture aloud, and the app includes automatic scrolling. The listed controls also let you change text size, choose text alignment and hide or show verse numbers. Its Play Store page declares advertising and optional purchases, and there is no iOS version.
Advantages:
- References placed right after each verse.
- Control over how many references are shown.
- Text-to-speech with automatic scrolling.
3. Study Bible Reference
Study Bible Reference, by Paul Ezaga, lets you jump from a verse to related texts and switch those links off when you want plain reading. Two versions, the Amplified Bible and the King James Version, can be compared to see how each renders a passage.
Text search, dark mode and a choice of font style are included, and the developer says every feature works without a connection. The Android listing also mentions commentary and shows ads and in-app purchases; the App Store listing shows no purchases.
Advantages:
- Related texts you can show or hide.
- Two versions for comparison.
- Offline use of all listed features.
4. The Context Bible
The Context Bible, from The Aspire Ed Project, connects every verse to research about it. A tap brings up verse-by-verse commentary, the historical and cultural setting of the passage, how early Christians read it and modern academic analysis, together with cross-references and thematic links.
Bookmarks and notes are available, and resources you save can be opened offline. The developer says new sources are added regularly. Its Google Play entry marks adverts and in-app purchases as absent, while the Apple entry records no in-app purchases.
Advantages:
- Background and commentary on every verse.
- Early church readings next to modern scholarship.
- Saved resources available offline.
