Chronological order of God of War

Due to the complexity of the story and the way the games were released, the chronological order of events may not be immediately clear to all fans.

1. God of War: Ascension

The first game in the chronological order of the series is God of War: Ascension, released in 2013 for PlayStation 3. This game serves as a prelude to the entire saga, showing events that took place before the main events of the original series.

In Ascension, players follow a younger, more impetuous version of Kratos as he struggles to break the ties that bind him to Ares, the god of war.

2. God of War: Chains of Olympus

The second game in the chronology is God of War: Chains of Olympus, originally released for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2008. This game takes place shortly after God of War: Ascension and shows Kratos still serving the gods of Olympus.

The story explores the events that lead Kratos to make a pact with the god of death, Thanatos, in exchange for power to save the city of Sparta.

3. God of War

The third game in the chronological order is simply titled God of War, released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. This game marked the beginning of the main series and established Kratos as one of the most iconic characters in video game history.

Here, players witness Kratos' journey of revenge against Ares, after being tricked by the god of war and having his family murdered.

4. God of War: Ghost of Sparta

God of War: Ghost of Sparta, released in 2010 for the PSP, is the fourth game in chronological order. It takes place between the events of God of War and God of War II, exploring Kratos' past as he searches for answers about his dark past and his connection to his mother, Callisto, and his brother, Deimos.

5. God of War II

The fifth game in the chronology is God of War II, released in 2007 for the PlayStation 2. This game continues immediately after the events of the first God of War and follows Kratos in his quest for revenge against the gods of Olympus, especially Zeus, who betrayed and abandoned him.

6. God of War III

The sixth game in the chronological order is God of War III, originally released for PlayStation 3 in 2010. In this game, players witness Kratos' epic final confrontation against the gods of Olympus, led by Zeus. The story culminates in Kratos' quest to destroy Olympus and everything it stands for.

7. God of War (2018)

Although technically not a direct sequel to the previous games, God of War released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 fits into Kratos' story in a significant way.

This one features an older, more mature Kratos, now living in Midgard, a world inhabited by Norse gods. Accompanied by his son Atreus, Kratos embarks on a journey to scatter the ashes of his dead wife, facing new challenges and confronting his troubled past.

Kratos' journey in a way that makes chronological sense

The chronological order of God of War may seem complicated at first glance, due to the way the games were released. However, by following the sequence mentioned above, players can experience Kratos' journey in a way that makes chronological sense.

From his first battles with the Greek gods to his new life in the Nordic kingdoms, each game adds layers to Kratos' complex story, making him one of the most fascinating and multifaceted characters in video games.
